Riddarholm Church (Riddarholmskyrkan)

Birger Jarls Torg 2, Stockholm, SWE

One of Stockholm’s oldest buildings, set in its historic Gamla Stan (Old Town), the Riddarholm Church (Riddarholmskyrkan) is an instantly recognizable part of the city’s skyline. Built in the 13th century and best known as the final resting place for Sweden’s royals, it’s distinguished by a red-brick facade that’s now accompanied by a cast-iron spire.

Built in association with the Greyfriars Monastery that once occupied this part of central Stockholm, the Riddarholm Church is vested with history and national mythology. Long a burial place for the country’s kings and members of the royal family, the church is now mainly a place of remembrance; its congregation was dissolved in 1807, and today it serves as a site for concerts and other ceremonies.

Visitors to the church can explore its highlights at their own pace, including the 17 royal tombs and burial chambers found within. The church also appears on numerous Stockholm tour itineraries, from walking tours of Gamla Stan to Segway excursions and city scavenger hunts.

  • The church has a wheelchair-accessible entrance on its north side.

  • It is requested that visitors turn off their mobile phones when entering; any photos or videos must be taken without flash, and are strictly for personal use.

  • No toilets are available on-site.

The Riddarholm Church is located on the small Riddarholmen Island, part of Stockholm’s Gamla Stan neighborhood in the heart of the city. It’s served by the nearby Gamla Stan T-bana (Underground) station, as well as several local bus lines. The church is also linked by multiple bridges to the popular Östermalm and Södermalm areas, making it easy to visit on foot or by bike.

The Riddarholm Church is open to the public during the summer months, from May through September, typically from morning until early evening. Note that it does occasionally host concerts and other public events at other times of the year, but is otherwise closed outside of its main summer visiting season.

While you’re in Stockholm’s Gamla Stan (Old Town) area, take the opportunity to explore its other historical highlights. Popular landmarks include the Royal Palace (the king’s official residence, and open to the public year-round); the Nobel Prize Museum; Stortorget (Gamla Stan’s main square, home to colorful heritage buildings), and the 17th-century House of Nobility.
