Red Tower (Kizil Kule)

Standing guard over the marina at the western edge of Portakal Beach, the Red Tower (Kızıl Kule) is one of Alanya’s most memorable landmarks, with its distinctive red brick and medieval ramparts. Dating back to the 13th century, the tower was part of the mighty sea defense walls of Alanya Castle and affords magnificent views across the harbor.
Tours of Alanya often include a visit to the Red Tower, alongside Alanya Castle and Damlatas Cave. Climb the winding stairways up to the top of the 95-foot (29-meter) tower for views over the beach and marina, walk along the old sea walls, or admire the tower from the water on a boat cruise. Inside the tower, each of the five floors displays various artifacts from Alanya’s history, curated by Alanya Museum.

While the base of the tower is accessible for wheelchairs and strollers, the top is only accessible by steps, and the uneven footing might be challenging for small children or those with limited mobility.
The Red Tower is located along Alanya’s seafront, beneath the castle, and is easy to spot from Portakal Beach. Local buses 1, 40, and 50 stop right by the tower, and it’s about a 10-minute walk or 5-minute taxi ride from either of Alanya’s beaches.
The Red Tower is open daily from 9am to 7pm in the summer and 8am to 6pm in winter. Peak season is July through August, when there can be long lines to enter the Red Tower. To dodge the crowds, arrive at opening or just before closing—you’ll get the best views at these times, too, when the sun is lower in the sky.
Follow along the old sea walls from the Red Tower, and you’ll reach Alanya Shipyard, one of the best-preserved ancient docklands in the Mediterranean. Dating back to the 3rd century BC, the shipyard was rebuilt in 1226 and affords a fascinating insight into Alanya’s historic seaport, which was once a naval base and an important Mediterranean trading port. Stroll the boardwalk for views over the Shipyard or scramble down to explore further.
