President James Buchanan's Wheatland
230 N. President Ave., Lancaster, PA, 17603
President James Buchanan's Wheatland is at 230 N. President Ave. Wheatland, home of the 15th U.S. president James Buchanan from 1848-68, highlights the life of America's only bachelor president and the only Pennsylvanian to hold the office. During Buchanan's presidential years the home served as his personal retreat and offered respite from public life. He conducted his 1856 campaign from here, and it also served as Democratic Party headquarters. From the front porch he accepted his party's nomination and the general election results. Tours of the 1828 Federal-style mansion include public and private rooms furnished in period. Interpreters in period dress help illustrate Buchanan's life and times. The grounds include gardens, a carriage house, ice house and privy. Living history and Yuletide tours are offered seasonally. Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
