Place de la Bourse (Place Royale)

Bordeaux, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

One of Bordeaux’s most famous sights, the Place de la Bourse combines ancient and modern influences to create a welcoming public square. Built in the 18th century, the buildings here once housed the Bordeaux stock exchange as well as several private houses. The addition of the striking Mirror of Water feature in 2006 has turned this grand space into a must-visit destination.

This famous city square holds an important place in the history of Bordeaux. Built in the mid-18th century, it took 20 years to construct the stately buildings that curve around three of the square's sides (leaving the fourth open to the river Garonne).

In past years the central focus of the square was the Fountain of the Three Graces, built in 1869. More recently, the attention been shared with the popular Mirror of Water feature that was installed in 2006. Whether you’re passing through the square on a guided walking tour or gliding past on a river cruise, you won’t fail to be impressed by the grand spectacle.

  • The Place de la Bourse is a great spot for photographers, especially at night when the city lights are reflected in the Mirror of Water.

Place de la Bourse is right in the center of Bordeaux. You can easily access it on foot or by bike, city tram (take Line C to Place de la Bourse), or electric buggy, which can be hired in town for easy sightseeing.

The Place de la Bourse is a public space, open 24 hours a day. It’s a major city attraction and can be crowded during the day, especially on weekends and during the summer. It's especially nice to visit at night when the city lights are reflected in the Mirror of Water. In general, Spring and fall are the best times to visit, with milder temperatures and fewer crowds. Check the forecast for rain in the summer.

The region around Bordeaux has been producing wine for almost 2,000 years. You can learn all about it at the Cité du Vin, a huge museum and theme park dedicated to all things wine. Test your senses with the different winemaking scents, then head to the top floor to enjoy a glass of wine paired with great views of the city.
