Palace of Parliament (Palatul Parlamentului)

Strada Izvor 2-4, Bucharest, ROU

If you’re in Bucharest, it’s impossible to miss the massive Palace of Parliament which dominates the city center and contains more than 1,000 rooms. Built under the dictatorship of Nicolae Ceauşescu, this opulent edifice is now one of Bucharest’s most popular tourist attractions and home to the National Museum of Contemporary Art and more.

Alongside the National Museum of Contemporary Art, the Palace of Parliament also houses the Romanian Senate and Chamber of Deputies, the Museum of Communist Totalitarianism, and the Museum of the Palace. Tour the extravagant interior alongside a guide—both standard (hallways and main rooms) and extended (terraces and basement) options are available, depending how much you’d like to see.

A Palace of Parliament tour can also easily be combined with a half-, full-, or multi-day sightseeing excursion exploring top attractions in Bucharest, such as the Village Museum, Old Town Bucharest, and the Romanian Athenaeum.

  • Visitors to the Palace of Parliament must present ID, such as a passport or driver’s license.

  • There’s a small admission fee to tour the building, as well as an additional fee to take photos inside.

  • Booking your tour in advance is essential, especially during peak season and when there are scheduled government meetings.

  • Some tours of the Palace of Parliament are wheelchair-accessible.

The Palace of Parliament is located in downtown Bucharest, near Constitution Square. Enter from Natiunile Unite Boulevard on the building’s northern side. The closest subway stations are Izvor and Unirii Square, and several buses also stop nearby.

The Palace of Parliament is open daily—hours vary depending on the season. Standard tours take about 45 minutes, while extended tours last around an hour.

The massive scale of the Palace of Parliament has set a few world records. It’s the heaviest building in the world, the second largest administrative building in the world (after the Pentagon), and the third largest building by volume in the world (after Teotihuacan and Cape Canaveral).
