Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge

14000 W. SR 2, Oak Harbor, OH, 43449

Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge is 6.6 mi. n. on SR 19 then 3 mi. w. to 14000 W. SR 2. This nearly 5,500-acre site (some of which is closed to the public) is on Lake Erie and offers several walking/hiking trails ranging from .5 to 4.5 miles. One is an accessible wooden boardwalk and the others are covered in gravel; all are mostly flat and level. From the trails visitors can see spectacular views of marsh, meadow, scrub/shrub and wetland areas as well as an estuary. This is a great bird-watching locale, and the site is also home to coyotes, white-tailed deer, squirrels and other wildlife. A 3-story visitor center features interactive exhibits about local birds and wildlife in the refuge, and the third-floor observation deck is stocked with binoculars. Bird checklists are available. Limited hunting opportunities are available; contact the visitor center for details. Pet friendly (call for restrictions/fees.). Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
