Old Town of Montreux (Vieille-Ville de Montreux)

Montreux, CHE

Montreux, on the eastern shore of Lake Geneva, has been a popular hangout among artistic types since the 19th century. The Old Town of Montreux (Vieille-Ville de Montreux) is an often overlooked part of the city, due to its location on a steep hill high above the town, but the views and relaxed atmosphere are worth the climb.

Montreux is famous for its annual jazz festival and lakeside location, but don't skip a visit to the Old Town. Its high elevation offers views over the city, Lake Geneva, and the mountains. The streets and buildings boast steep winding lanes and pastel-painted houses. Stop at Montreux Museum for insight into town history. Use the Old Town as a starting point for hikes into the hills and forests; try following the marked trail to Gorges du Chauderon.

  • This area is not easily accessible for wheelchair users, as the streets are steep and lined with cobblestones.

  • Unlike many old towns throughout Europe, the Old Town of Montreux is mostly residential, so respect people's privacy when photographing homes and exploring the streets.

  • There are a few restaurants in the Old Town, but you’ll find more options in the central city.

Due to its narrow streets, it’s best to walk to the Old Town. There is a bus, but it only travels about halfway up, so it's of limited convenience. The Old Town is about a 20-minute walk from the Montreux railway station.

The Lake Geneva area is a year-round destination, as visitors come to hike and sightsee in warmer months and to ski in winter. The same applies to Montreux; however wandering the streets of the Old Town is more pleasant in good weather.

Just south of Montreux is Château de Chillon, one of Switzerland’s most beautiful and visited castles. The sturdy, turreted castle dates back to the 12th century and is located on its own island in Lake Geneva. It’s a must-visit attraction when staying in or around Montreux. When the conditions are right, the lake, mountains, and castle make for a picture-perfect scene.
