Natural Arch (Arco Naturale)

Capri, Campania

Whether glimpsed by land or sea, the towering Natural Arch is one of the most impressive sights along the coastline of Capri. This spectacular limestone arch stands 60 feet (18 meters tall and 40 feet (12 meters wide, and is all that remains of a Paleolithic cave. Take an island boat tour or hike the scenic trail to take in its majesty.

The Natural Arch is one of Capri’s top coastal landmarks, and boat tours around the island generally pass beneath its soaring heights so passengers can admire the stone formation from below and make stops at the Blue Grotto, Green Grotto, and Faraglioni sea stacks. Otherwise, hike the scenic Pizzolungo trail along the eastern coast to reach the arch by land, and admire tremendous views of the Sorrentine Peninsula, Punta Campanella, and the islets of the Li Galli archipelago along the way.

  • Be sure to wear a hat and sunscreen if taking a boat tour or hiking on the island. Bring a swimsuit and towel if your boat tour includes a stop to swim.
  • Some boat tours are not accessible to wheelchair users, so confirm in advance. The Pizzolungo trail is not wheelchair accessible.
  • Avid photographers will find that the arch can provide an ideal picture frame for capturing seascapes in the distance.
  • Kids especially enjoy boat tours around the island, especially if they include a stop to swim.

The Natural Arch can be seen from below via boat, or from land via the Pizzolungo trail that departs from Via Tragara in Capri town and passes the Grotta di Matermania, where the path becomes narrow and steep. From the grotto, climb the final 200 steps up to the arch.

If taking in the Natural Arch by boat, set sail during the hottest hours of midday to escape the crowds and heat on the island. If hiking to the arch, time your departure for the early morning to avoid the high temperatures later in the day.

The coastline of Capri is considered among the most beautiful of all Italy’s islands, dotted with sea grottoes, tiny coves, and picturesque Marina Piccola harbor. In addition to the Natural Arch, highlights include the Blue Grotto, White Grotto, and Green Grotto, soaring Faraglioni sea stacks, and Punta Carena lighthouse.
