National Parliament House (Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban)

Dhaka, Dhaka Division

In a city better known for its mosques and Mughal-era architecture, Dhaka’s National Parliament House (Jatiya Sangshad) is a masterpiece of contemporary architecture. Designed by American architect Louis Kahn, the governmental building makes unusual and interesting use of concrete and marble side-by-side. It’s a must-visit attraction in Dhaka and a fixture on many tour itineraries.

Construction on the National Parliament House began in 1962 when Dhaka was part of Pakistan, but the project was paused in 1971 during the Bangladesh War of Independence. It resumed in the newly independent nation of Bangladesh as a reflection of Bengali democracy and pride and was finally completed in 1982. The vast modern building is a fine example of the meeting of contemporary and Bangladeshi vernacular architecture. It’s an impressive sight whether you’re an architecture buff or not.

You can visit the National Parliament House independently, but many people prefer to go on an organized tour as you need to apply for tickets in advance. Day tours of Dhaka often include this building with other city highlights, including Old Dhaka and the Sadarghat port.

  • The public can enter, but you must apply for tickets at least one day in advance.

  • Tickets are free for Bangladeshis (although they still need to apply in advance), but foreign visitors must pay a small entry fee.

  • You’re not allowed to take cameras or phones inside.

National Parliament House is located in the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar neighborhood of Dhaka, north of the Old Town. It’s easy to reach by taxi, CNG (auto-rickshaw), or bus if you’re feeling adventurous. Many travelers visit on guided tours that include private transportation.

The inside of the National Parliament House is closed to visitors on weekends (Friday and Saturday) and government holidays. More generally, the best time to visit Bangladesh is the cooler winter (December–February), and you should avoid visiting during the intensely wet monsoon season (May–October).

Fans of the National Parliament House should also check out Dhaka’s award-winning Bait Ur Rouf Mosque, a modern structure built in 2012. It’s made from bricks, wood, and stone and is interesting enough from the outside, but the inside is extraordinary. Gaps in the bricks allow light to filter through the walls and the ceilings, creating a peaceful and celestial atmosphere for worship. Find it in a residential area of northern Dhaka.
