POINT OF INTEREST

National Naval Museum (Museo Naval de la Nacion)

Ave. Victorica 602, Tigre, Buenos Aires

Sitting on the Lujan River at the mouth of the Tigre Delta, this waterside museum boasts the ideal setting for Argentina’s National Naval Museum. The museum is devoted to the country’s naval history and rich maritime heritage and is packed with seafaring memorabilia—from ancient maps and naval weaponry to large-scale models of ships and cabins.

Whether you visit independently or join a guided tour, there’s plenty to see at the National Naval Museum. Housed in a former maritime workshop, you can follow the history of Argentina's navy and admire Latin America’s most important collection of maritime items. Highlights include naval uniforms, knives and firearms, maritime art, several scale models of historic ships, and a series of miniature ship cabin recreations that offer a fascinating insight into life onboard.

Travelers typically combine the museum with a boat cruise around the Tigre Delta and time in Tigre. You can do both on a half or full-day trip from Buenos Aires.

  • Exhibitions are in Spanish only, so bring a translation app if your Spanish skills aren’t up to the challenge. English-language tours are possible, but it’s best to call ahead to confirm.

  • There is a small admission fee to enter the museum.

  • It’s not only maritime history on display at the museum—aviation enthusiasts can also admire a small collection of aircraft on the museum grounds.

The National Naval Museum is in the provincial town of Tigre, along the Lujan riverfront west of the harbor. Regular trains run from Belgrano station in Buenos Aires to Tigre (about a 45-minute journey); the museum is a 20-minute walk from the train station. Alternatively, catch one of the many buses that run along the waterfront or hop in a taxi.

The museum is only open three days a week. Swing by on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday between 10am and 6pm, or check for additional opening hours during the Argentine summer holidays (December-January). Guided tours typically take place three times a day, but it’s best to double-check the website as times are subject to change.

The riverside town of Tigre is one of the most popular side trips from Buenos Aires, just a short train or bus ride away. Start your exploration with a scenic cruise around the Tigre Delta, admiring the islands, floating markets, and traditional stilt houses from the water. Then, head ashore to browse the waterfront market and harbor, stroll around the colonial-era town, or get your adrenaline fix at the Parque de la Costa theme park.
