Markthal (Market Hall)

Verlengde Nieuwstraat, Rotterdam, NLD

Rotterdam’s new market hall is also the largest indoor market in the country. Architecturally striking, the building is designed with apartments flanking a horseshoe-shaped arch. Inside the glass facade is a covered public square and market hall, with more than 100 food stalls, eight restaurants, and 15 shops, and one of the Netherlands’ largest artworks on its ceiling.

Markthal is an ideal place to browse among local foods and prepared goods and stop for a bite to eat, with options including bakers, butchers, cheesemongers, fishmongers, and food stalls and restaurants spanning a range of cuisines. Markthal is included in numerous sightseeing tours of Rotterdam, such as walking, biking, pedicab, foodie, culture, architecture, hop-on, hop-off bus tours, and scavenger hunts, and can be combined with harbor cruises or visits to the Hague and Delft.

  • There’s no entrance fee to enter the market hall.
  • The market is ideal for foodies, art lovers, and architecture fans.
  • With the exception of the stall terraces, the space is wheelchair-accessible and wheelchairs are available.
  • Free WiFi is available, though it can be slow when there are a lot of visitors.
  • Outdoor dining areas are available.

Markthal is located in the Laurenskwartier district and is easily accessible on foot from central Rotterdam. By public transit, take the tram (21, 24), metro (A, B, C), or bus (32, 47) to Blaak station next door. There's a large parking garage underneath the market hall, with 1,200 parking spaces. Bike parking can be found between Markthal and Blaak Station.

The market is open daily. Most days it’s open from morning to evening, with shorter hours on Sundays; holidays and special events can affect the hours. Some of the restaurants that have their own entrances offer different opening hours. The parking garage is open 24 hours a day. Holidays are a festive time to visit and offer special themed lighting.

Wrapping around the interior curved ceiling of the Markthal is a 118,403-square-foot (11,000-square-meter) mural by artists Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam. Titled Hoorn des Overvloeds (translating to “Horn of Plenty” or “Cornucopia”) it features large-scale, colorful images of produce, fruits, flowers, and insects (in a nod to 17th-century Dutch still life paintings), which were digitally rendered and printed on 4,000 aluminum panels. It’s one of the largest pieces of art in the Netherlands and has been referred to as the “Sistine Chapel of Rotterdam.”
