POINT OF INTEREST

Maison de van Gogh (Auberge Ravoux)

52 Rue du Général de Gaulle, Auvers-sur-Oise, Île-de-France

Located in the village of Auvers-sur-Oise northwest of Paris, the Maison de van Gogh was where Vincent van Gogh spent the final 70 days of his life—renting a humble room in its attic and producing nearly 70 works. Today, the landmark has been restored to its 19th century appearance—you can see van Gogh’s room, plus the room of another contemporaneous artist, Anton Hirschig.

The listed French Historical Landmark—also known as the Auberge Ravoux—serves as a small museum dedicated to the beloved artist’s life and legacy. You can see what his 19th-century accommodations looked like as you visit his attic room number 5, and learn more about his life during a video screening. The downstairs restaurant at the Auberge has been open since 1876; it serves cheese, charcuterie, and wine.

The Maison de van Gogh is just a quick trip from Paris, making it easy to visit during the day. It also features on numerous tour itineraries, many of which also visit Giverny, the former home of Monet.

  • Unfortunately, as a historic building, the Maison de Van Gogh is not wheelchair-accessible.
  • This is a small museum, and most visits average around 30 minutes. To extend your experience, stay for a light lunch or glass of wine in the downstairs dining room.
  • There is a bookshop-cum-gift shop on site, where you can pick up mementos and books.

The Maison de van Gogh is just 22 miles (35 kilometers) northwest of Paris. The nearest train stations to the museum are Pontoise, which you can access from Gare du Nord in Paris, and Saint-Ouen-l'Aumône, served by the RER C; both are approximately 4 miles (7 kilometers) away. From central Paris, it’s a 1-hour car trip via the A115.

The Maison de van Gogh is open seasonally, typically from early March to mid-November. During the season, it’s open daily, except on Mondays and Tuesdays, from morning until early evening. The on-site restaurant maintains the same opening hours, but doesn’t serve dinner.

The village of Auvers-sur-Oise isn’t just home to the Maison de van Gogh—and given the museum’s small size, it’s worth sticking around to discover some of the region’s other draws. Highlights include the impressive Château d’Auvers, the Auvers church (immortalized by van Gogh), the Auvers-sur-Oise cemetery (van Gogh’s final resting place), and the Absinthe Museum (Musée de l'Absinthe).
