Luxembourg American Cultural Society and Center (LACS)

100 Peter Thein Avenue, Belgium, Wisconsin

You can find one of the largest Luxembourgish communities outside of Europe between Milwaukee and Sheboygan. It’s in, oddly enough, a town called Belgium, Wisconsin. The Luxembourg American Cultural Society and Center (LACS) caters to this community, preserving the fabric uniting this tiny town with this tiny country and showcasing to visitors the Luxembourg–Wisconsin connection.

The Luxembourg American Cultural Society and Center which is a museum and research center is in a Luxembourgian stone barn, originally built in 1872 It by Jacob Mamer, an immigrant who recreated his home country’s traditional style. The LACS’ Roots and Leaves Museum is the centerpiece of this attraction, with permanent exhibits detailing the story of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, the immigration history of Luxembourg–Americans, and the current relationship between Luxembourg and the United States. You can also stop by the research center to see if your genealogy connects you back to the tiny European country (and maybe even the Grand Duchy himself).

  • While the museum is open to the public, accessing the research center needs an appointment.

  • LACS has created a self-guided audio tour that starts in downtown Belgium and ends at the museum if you’d like a deeper dive (find it on their website).

  • LACS also runs language classes, events, and festivals, and can even assist with dual citizenship.

The Luxembourg American Cultural Society and Center can be found in the tiny town of Belgium, Wisconsin, right off N Royal Ave, one of two major streets in town. You can find Belgium just off I-43, south of Sheboygan and about an hour north of Milwaukee. Parking is available onsite.

When to get there The LACS’ Roots and Leaves Museum typically has pretty limited hours, and they vary across the seasons (reduced hours in winter). Wednesday–Friday are usually your best bets, though do check the website in advance of your visit. Access to the Dooley-Wagner Research Center requires an appointment, typically within the museum’s open hours.

Though it’s not nearly as well-known as its fellow European counterparts, Luxembourg had its own political turmoil in the 1800s, similar to Ireland. Many citizens were farmers, and when the land didn’t yield, their gaze moved to America, where cheap land meant a fresh start. It’s a Luxembourg story this time, but it’s also one that speaks to a humanity we all understand.
