Li Galli (Sirenuse)

This archipelago comprises La Castelluccia, Gallo Lungo, and La Rotonda, and is considered one of the most scenic spots off Italy’s southern coast. That said, the islands are a staple of boat tours that usually cover Sorrento, the Amalfi Coast, and Capri. Most cruises that depart from the mainland to Capri sail past Li Galli, so join a small-group or private excursion to take in this trio of islets.

• Older kids especially love to swim and snorkel in the open sea surrounding the archipelago, but the water may be too rough for younger swimmers.
• Be sure to bring your swimsuit, sunscreen, and a hat on boat tours that include stops to swim; most tours provide snorkeling equipment on board.
• Not all boat tours are accessible to wheelchair users, so confirm in advance.

The Li Galli islets are located just off the Amalfi Coast and can only be reached by boat. Most boat tours between the Amalfi Coast and Capri sail past the archipelago and some stop for a break to swim or snorkel. The islands are private property and cannot be explored by land.

Stop by the islets during the warmest hours of midday if planning to swim or snorkel, as the water temperature in the open sea stays cool all year round. Photographers and romantics should time their sail past the archipelago for sunset, when the islets and surrounding waters are bathed in golden light.

The three islets were purchased by Russian choreographer and dancer Leonide Massine in 1922, when the historic monastery and prison on Gallo Lungo was converted into a private residence. After Massine’s death, the Russian dancer Rudolf Nureyev bought the islands and lived there until his death in 1993. In 1996, the archipelago was acquired by a Sorrento hotelier and are now filled with luxury holiday properties.
