Lalbagh Fort (Fort Aurangabad)

Lalbagh Road, Dhaka, Dhaka Division

Built in the 17th century, when Dhaka was part of the Mughal Empire, Lalbagh Fort (Fort Aurangabad) remains one of the city's top attractions. Many visitors come to see its perfectly symmetrical gardens or explore its interiors, parts of which have been converted into a history museum.

This well-preserved fort is a fantastic example of Mughal architecture. Still, parts of it were left unfinished, as the builder's daughter died suddenly while it was under construction, which was considered a bad omen. Still, there’s plenty to see, whether independently or on one of the many Dhaka city tours that stop at this famous attraction.

  • Lalbagh Fort is a must-see for architecture buffs and history fans.

  • Expect to do a fair amount of walking while at the fort. Comfortable footwear is a must.

  • Parts of the fort are exposed to the elements, so sun protection (or rain protection, depending on the season) is necessary.

Lalbagh Fort is in Old Dhaka, a short walk from the Dhakeshwari Temple. The area is well-served by public transportation and is easy to get to by taxi or autorickshaw, but it's even easier to reach as part of a guided tour. Many tours even include pickup at your hotel for added convenience.

The fort is open Monday through Saturday and closed on Sundays. Hours vary, but it generally opens in the morning and stays open until late afternoon, with a short break for lunch. Fridays have longer midday breaks, and the fort is only open in the afternoon on Mondays. For the most up-to-date information on hours, check with your guide.

If you're a fan of history and architecture, it's worth considering a visit to Sonargaon, a hillside town about an hour’s drive from the city. You can see many interesting old buildings here, including an eclectic mix of ancient ruins, Hindu shrines, Mughal mosques and tombs, and British colonial structures.
