King's College

King’s Parade, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire

Founded in 1441 by Henry VI, King’s College is one of the most prestigious and perhaps the best-known of the Cambridge colleges. Notable alumni include writer Zadie Smith and mathematician Alan Turing; however, it’s the grounds and buildings which are of most interest to visitors. Here, explore landscaped gardens, stroll along the River Cam, and admire the 15th-century Gothic King’s College Chapel.

Admission tickets to King’s College include self-guided access to the Chapel—home to the world’s largest fan vaulted ceiling—and the expansive grounds, but all other buildings are off-limits to the general public.

To gain a deeper understanding of King’s College history, visit as part of a student- or graduate-led tour, or opt for an excursion which includes stops at other Cambridge colleges such as Pembroke. Meanwhile, time-pressed travelers can combine Cambridge city tours with visits to King’s College or explore both Oxford University and Cambridge University in one day.

  • History buffs and architecture fans won’t want to miss a visit to King’s College.

  • Admission tickets to King’s College can be purchased both online and on the day from the King’s College Visitor Centre.

  • King’s College is free to enter for children aged 11 and below, when accompanied by a paying adult.

  • Visitors can attend Evensong for free.

  • King’s College Chapel and the grounds are fully accessible for wheelchair users and strollers.

King’s College is situated on the banks of the River Cam in Cambridge, just west of the city center. Those arriving by train should depart at Cambridge station, then take a bus or taxi to the city center. From there, King’s College is just a short walk. There’s no on-site parking for members of the public at King’s College.

King’s College is generally open to the public from Monday to Friday during term time, between 9:30am and 3:30pm. Saturday opening hours are more limited and opening hours may differ outside of term time. Check in advance to avoid disappointment.

King’s College Choir is one of the most renowned choirs in Britain and visitors to Cambridge should take advantage of their trip to enjoy a live performance. Choral services typically take place in the King’s College Chapel at 5:30pm on weekdays and at 10:30am and 3:30pm on Sundays during term time. They’re free to enter and last around 45 minutes but be prepared to queue to gain access. Check schedules in advance.
