Iztuzu Beach (Turtle Beach)

A narrow spit of sand stretching out into the ocean, Iztuzu Beach (Turtle Beach) takes its name from the loggerhead sea turtles that nest on its shores. Forming a natural barrier between the Dalyan River and the Mediterranean Sea, the protected beach is one of the most important breeding grounds for the endangered creatures in Turkey (officially the Republic of Türkiye).
Sunseekers come to Iztuzu Beach to lounge on its golden sands and swim against a background of forested mountains. Turtle sightings are common, and you might even find yourself swimming alongside them. Stick around until sunset when the turtles return to their beachside nests, or pay a visit to the Turtle Conservation Center at the south end of the beach to learn more.
Day tours from Fethiye and Marmaris often combine a visit to Iztuzu Beach with a cruise along the Dalyan River. Stop along the way to admire the ancient King’s Tombs at nearby Kaunos, cruise around the Köyceğiz Lake nature reserve, or enjoy a soak in the thermal springs and mineral-rich mud baths along the riverside.

Parts of the beach are closed to the public during the turtle nesting season, and metal cages are set up to protect the nests.
The beach has restrooms, showers, picnic benches, and food kiosks; sunbeds and parasols are available to rent in high season.
Iztuzu Beach lies between Fethiye and Marmaris along Turkey’s Mediterranean coast. Most day-trippers arrive by boat along the Dalyan River, landing at the north end of the beach. To arrive by road, it’s about 8 miles (13 kilometers) south of Dalyan village—a 20-minute taxi or dolmuş (shared minibus) ride.
Iztuzu Beach draws large crowds during the summer months, but most visitors are concentrated at the north and south ends of the beach. Loggerhead turtles nest on the beach from May to August, and July to August is the best time to spot the baby turtles making their way out to sea.
A popular resort town and cruise ship port of call, Marmaris is well-situated for exploring Turkey’s Mediterranean coast. Visit the ancient city of Ephesus—home to remarkably preserved Roman ruins—or admire the travertine terraces of Pamukkale; both are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Alternatively, set sail for the Greek island of Rhodes, or stay closer to shore with a cruise to Cleopatra Island, famous for its white shell sands.
