Iwo Jima Memorial
320 Iwo Jima Blvd., Harlingen, TX, 78550
Iwo Jima Memorial is on the south campus parade deck of the Marine Military Academy next to Harlingen International Airport. The original sculpture of World War II's Iwo Jima flag-raising was donated by its creator, Felix de Weldon, to the academy. This full-scale statue was the model used to cast the Marine Corps War Memorial for Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. Buried next to the Iwo Jima Memorial is Harlon Block, one of the six flag-raisers. Museum displays include items from the battle, brief biographies of the people portrayed in the sculpture, and the Hall of Fame of Iwo Jima Veterans, a series of books that contain information and “then and now” pictures of Iwo Jima veterans. A video documentary of the battle for Iwo Jima is shown daily. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
