House of the Blackheads (Melngalvju Nams)

Rātslaukums 7, Central District, Riga, LVA

Built in 1334 for the Brotherhood of Blackheads—a guild for unmarried German merchants in Latvia—the House of the Blackheads (Melngalvju Nams) is one of Riga’s grandest buildings. This Gothic structure, which features an elaborate Renaissance facade, now functions as a venue for concerts, exhibitions, and festive events, and the interior is open for visitors to explore.

Inside the House of the Blackheads, you'll find magnificent crystal chandeliers, a painted ceiling above the conference hall, and exact replicas of 19th-century chairs and sofas; the exterior is the perfect backdrop for a photo. There’s an admission fee to enter the building and an additional fee for a guided tour. Walking tours of Riga typically include a visit to the building, although usually only allow you time to view the facade.

  • House of the Blackheads is a must-visit for architecture and history lovers.

  • Admission to the building includes access to its halls, cabinets, and medieval cellars.

  • The house is home to the Baltics’ largest private silverware collection.

House of the Blackheads is located in the heart of Old City Riga (Vecriga) and is within an easy reach of many hotels and attractions, including City Hall and Riga Cathedral. The closest tram station is Grecinieku iela, which is served by lines 1, 2, 5, and 10.

House of the Blackheads is open from Tuesday through Sunday from 11am to 6pm. The building also opens in the evening for occasional special events. Check the website for details.

The House of the Blackheads has been rebuilt on several occasions, most recently in the 1990s, long after having being completely destroyed during World War II. This commitment to rebuilding fulfills the words engraved above the entrance: “Should I ever crumble to dust, rebuild my walls you must!” Look out for the motto before you enter.
