Hosios Loukas Monastery (Moni Osios Loukas)

Steiri, 321 00

One of a trio of UNESCO-listed Greek monasteries, the Hosios Loukas Monastery (Moni Osios Loukas—now preserved as a museum—is an exquisite example of Byzantine-era monastic architecture. Founded in the early 10th century, the complex comprises two beautifully conserved churches on the wooded slopes of Mount Helicon.

The basics

Perched above a remote valley southeast of Arahova, the Hosios Loukas Monastery is a highlight of many full-day Delphi tours or multi-day tours that also include stops at Epidaurus, Mycenae, Olympia, and Meteora. Visit the monastery’s Katholikón of Ósios Loukás, the larger of its two churches and renowned for its elaborate 11th-century interiors that are a masterpiece of colored marble, vivid frescoes, and extraordinary mosaics, including icons by 16th-century painter Michael Damaskinos. The neighboring Chapel of Theotókos is Greece’s only remaining 10th-century church and is most impressive from the outside, with its classical Byzantine structure and elaborate brickwork.

Things to know before you go

  • You must have shoulders and knees covered to enter the monastery’s churches, so dress accordingly.
  • The complex includes a scenic terrace with views over the surrounding valley and a small café for drinks and snacks.
  • The steep, winding road up the mountainside to reach the monastery can be a challenge to navigate on your own; join a small-group or private tour to skip the hassle of driving.
  • The historic complex has a number of steps and may be tricky to navigate with a wheelchair or stroller.

How to get there

The Hosios Loukas Monastery is located between the villages of Distomo and Kyriaki in south-central Greece, about a 20-minute drive from Delphi. There is no public transportation, so you can catch a taxi or join a tour that includes transportation up the monastery complex.

When to get there

Set high on the slopes of Mt. Helicon, the monastery complex remains relatively cool and peaceful even during the high-season summer months. Photographers should visit in the early morning or late afternoon hours to capture the monastery and surrounding views in the best lighting.
