Heidelberg Old Town (Altstadt)

Heidelberg, Germany

Sitting beneath the hilltop Heidelberg Castle along the southern bank of the Neckar River, Heidelberg Altstadt (Old Town) is a large and atmospheric cluster of narrow streets, beautiful architecture, and historic buildings. It’s the focal point of most travelers’ visits to Heidelberg and a charming place to stroll around before or after a visit to the castle.

Heidelberg’s architecture and setting between the Neckar River and forested hills make it one of Germany’s most beautiful towns. It's also home to one of Germany’s oldest universities: the 14th-century University of Heidelberg is in the Altstadt, and a collection of squares, markets, and museums radiate from there. Almost all visitors to Heidelberg spend time in the Altstadt. Take a guided tour to learn more about the town’s history and cultural significance. Many walking tours combine visits to the Altstadt and Heidelberg Castle.

  • Wear comfortable shoes for exploring Heidelberg Altstadt, as the streets are cobbled and uneven in places.

  • Visiting Heidelberg Altstadt is free but some attractions have entry fees.

  • If you’re traveling independently, leave at least half a day to explore the area, as there are many churches, museums, and markets to visit.

Even if you’re traveling with a car, avoid driving to Heidelberg Altstadt. It’s a narrow area and parking can be a problem. Buses stop on all roads around the Altstadt and a few venture into the heart of the neighborhood, especially around the university. A streetcar line runs west of the Altstadt and north across the river. Alternatively, rent a bicycle, as Heidelberg is a bike-friendly city.

Summer is the most popular time to visit Heidelberg when the weather is warm, but it’s also the most crowded. Big groups often visit on day trips from Frankfurt or on cruises, but the streets are quieter in the early morning and evening. Winters are cold but it’s nice to wander without the crowds during this season. The Altstadt hosts autumn and Christmas festivals.

Heidelberg’s ruined schloss (castle) is a symbol of the city. Built in the 13th century and reflecting different periods of German architecture and history, Heidelberg Castle didn’t just fall into disrepair: the French destroyed it in the late-17th-century War of the Grand Alliance. Learn all about this on a castle tour. Walk up from the Altstadt, or take the funicular railway.
