Halifax Citadel National Historic Site

Halifax Citadel National Historic Site is at 5425 Sackville St. on Citadel Hill overlooking downtown Halifax. One of the country's best surviving examples of a 19th-century fortification, the current large star-shaped masonry structure is the fourth fort to be built on this site; it was completed in 1856 to defend the city and harbor. It was occupied by the British until 1906 and then by the Canadian military until well after World War II. Exhibits and restored rooms, including a guard room, tailor shop and barracks, depict the fort's significance as a key naval station within the British Empire. Interesting features include a musketry gallery defensive ditch, military and signal masts, and vaulted rooms. The ramparts offer excellent views of Halifax and its harbor. The Army Museum offers outstanding exhibits that range from the First World War's Road to the Vimy and Beyond to the Second World War's Trail of the Canadian Army 1939-1945 through the Korean War, peace operations and the Afghanistan conflict, all with a special emphasis on Nova Scotia's soldiers. Between May and October interpreters dressed as members of the 78th Highlanders regiment and the 3rd Brigade of the Royal Artillery re-enact military drills. One of the oldest continuous noon guns in the world is fired every day, stopping only for Christmas Day. Visitors also can see interactive exhibits, audiovisual displays, marching bands and muster parades. Guided tours are available. Picnicking is permitted. Food is available.
