Fort Macon State Park

Fort Macon State Park, 424 acres, is 2 mi. e. on SR 58 to 2303 E. Fort Macon Rd. Fort Macon was built 1826-34; young Lt. Robert E. Lee designed the garrison's jetties. The Confederacy captured the fort during the Civil War. Exhibits include re-creations of the mess hall, kitchen, living quarters and WWII barracks. Other features include a moat, powder magazines and several cannons. Bathhouse facilities are available. Guided tours are available. Pet friendly (call for restrictions/fees.). Recreational activities are permitted. Picnicking is permitted. Food is available. Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.
