Chowmahalla Palace

Widely believed to be modeled on the Shah of Iran's palace in Tehran, the Chowmahalla Palace complex comprises the grand Khilwat Mubarak (or Darbaar Hall) with its stunning Belgian chandeliers, gardens with fountains, northern and southern courtyards, and a clock tower over the main gate at the palace entrance. Chowmahalla Palace is situated on Khilwat Road in the heart of Old Hyderabad, and the whole area around the palace is imminently walkable. To get there, walk 10 minutes from popular Laad Bazaar or Mecca Masjid and the adjacent Charminar. Alternatively, the complex is a 15-minute drive south of the railway station.

Chowmahalla Palace is open from 10am to 5pm Saturday through Thursday, and is closed on Fridays and national holidays. It's best to visit first thing in the morning when temperatures are cooler and crowds are fewer, especially if you are visiting during the hot months of May and June.

Collecting cars has long been a royal pastime across India, and one of the buildings within the palace grounds is now used as a car museum for all the vehicles imported by the nizam at the turn of the last century. The private collection, accessible to visitors who tour the palace complex, includes vintage Rolls Royces, Bentleys, and a range of well-maintained American cars.
