Some 4,000 animals representing 230 species, including the iconic giant panda and rare South China tiger, call the Chongqing Zoo (Chongqing Dongwuyuan home. Besides animal exhibits, the zoo also features an outdoor state, teahouse, amusement park, and a roller skating rink, making it a favorite family attraction.
The Chongqing Zoo is one of the best places in the region to see giant pandas; their enclosure alone measures nearly five acres (two hectares). Visitors can explore the zoo on their own with a basic admission ticket or opt for a guided tour to learn more about the animals on exhibit. The zoo is in the Jiulongpo District of Chongqing, about five miles (eight km) from the city center. Several public buses stop at Dongwuyuan Station just outside, or you could take the Metro Line 2 to Dongwuyuan Station.
The zoo is open daily from 7am to 6pm throughout the year, though it’s best to visit on a clear day in spring or autumn when temperatures are cool. Avoid visiting on Chinese national holidays.
The giant pandas are by far the most popular animal residents of the Chongqing Zoo, but they can also be rather shy. For the best chance of seeing the bears, visit the enclosure during their morning feeding time, typically around 9am daily.
