Chaukhtatgyi Paya (Chaukhtatgyi Buddha Temple)

The reclining Buddha at Chaukhtatgyi Paya is an important destination for Buddhists in Myanmar, and it’s likely that you’ll share the site with more monks than tourists. While Chaukhtatgyi Paya isn’t as famous as some of Yangon’s other temples, it’s an included stop on some tours of the city. Since the Yangon Circular Railway passes nearby, it can be visited while exploring Yangon by train, whether on your own or as part of a guided tour.

Chaukhtatgyi Paya is located on Shwegondaing Road, north of downtown Yangon. If you’re visiting with a tour, they’ll take care of transport; otherwise, it’s possible to travel from the center by taxi. Alternatively, use the Yangon Circular Railway to reach Myitta Nyunt Railway Station. From there, it’s a 1.5-mile (2.4-kilometer) walk or taxi ride to Chaukhtatgyi Paya.

Mornings are especially quiet at Chaukhtatgyi Paya, but there’s no bad time to visit, since it’s rare for the site to be crowded. On festival days, you’ll find local crowds, and a chance to see the temple come alive with a festive spirit.

Observing a few rules of etiquette can ensure your trip is respectful of local traditions. Keep in mind that you’ll need to remove your shoes inside temples, and that modest dress is a good idea—try for clothing that covers both shoulders and knees. Avoid pointing your feet at images of the Buddha, and never touch them. Women should also avoid touching Buddhist monks.
