Butterfly Valley (Kelebekler Vadisi)

Kelebekler Vadisi, Uzunyurt, Fethiye, Muğla

Butterfly Valley (Kelebekler Vadisi) makes a dramatic first impression with its narrow gorge, steep cliffs, and white sand. Reachable only by boat, the secluded cove gets its name from the many species of butterflies and moths that breed in the valley.

For the best views of Butterfly Valley, take a boat cruise; tours typically depart from nearby Ölüdeniz. To truly immerse yourself in the natural setting, follow the hiking trail to a 60-foot (18-meter) waterfall and then head back to the beach to swim and snorkel. Along the way, admire the myriad butterflies fluttering through the air and keep a look out for rare species such as the rare Jersey Tiger butterfly.

  • 105 different butterfly species have been spotted in the gorge, which makes Butterfly Valley a must-visit place for nature lovers.

  • There’s little shade in the valley, so bring sunscreen and a hat, and don’t forget your swimsuit. Waterproof shoes are recommended for hiking through the valley, as you’ll pass over small streams.

  • There’s a café and gift shop on the beach, where you can buy drinks, snacks, and souvenirs.

  • Access to the valley might be tricky for wheelchair users—it’s best to seek the advice of your tour provider.

Butterfly Valley is located 14 miles (23 kilometers) south of Fethiye and can only be accessed by boat. Most travelers arrive as part of a half- or full-day boat cruise, or else water taxis can be hired from the port in Ölüdeniz.

Though it’s possible to visit the valley year-round, the best time to admire the moths and butterflies is during the summer, from June through October.

Butterfly Valley is surrounded by an eclectic mix of attractions. Stop to explore the ghost village of Kayaköy, a former Greek Christian village abandoned during the early-20th-century or admire the Blue Lagoon in Oludeniz, a natural wonder ringed by white sands and set against a backdrop of Mount Babadag. Cruises to Butterfly Valley often include stops to swim and snorkel along the Mediterranean coast or a visit to Gemiler Island (St. Nicholas Island), dotted with ancient Byzantine ruins.
