POINT OF INTEREST

Buckhorn Saloon & Museum

318 E Houston St., San Antonio, Texas

Stuffed critters and a shooting gallery make having a drink at this 130-year-old saloon a memorable experience. The historic locale is also home to two museums: the Buckhorn Museum, showcasing some 520 species of taxidermy wildlife, and the Texas Ranger Museum, highlighting artifacts from a century of Ranger history.

The Buckhorn Saloon is one of San Antonio’s most historic watering holes and an atmospheric spot to grab a local beer on draft. The saloon and café are free to visit (apart from your order), though the two museums charge an entrance fee (both museums on one ticket). The museums are also included in some San Antonio multi-attraction passes, which include admission or discounts to other sights around the city.

  • The Buckhorn Saloon & Museum is a must for history buffs, families, and first-time visitors.
  • Consider buying your entrance ticket online before your arrival to save time and money.
  • The space is wheelchair accessible.

The museum and saloon are in downtown San Antonio, 2 blocks from the Alamo and 1 block from the Riverwalk. It’s easy to get there on foot.

The saloon and museum are open daily throughout the year, though hours vary depending on the day and season. It’s a good place to stop in for a drink or snack before or after visiting the Alamo nearby.

The Buckhorn Saloon has witnessed its fair share of history over its 130 years of operation. It was here where Teddy Roosevelt recruited his Rough Riders, and local legend says that Pancho Villa planned the Mexican Revolution while imbibing at the bar. Many of the original furnishings remain, including the marble and cherrywood back bar.
