Belgrade Fortress (Beogradska Tvrdava)

Kalemegdan, Belgrade, SRB

Located in Belgrade’s Stari Grad municipality, at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, Belgrade Fortress was erected in the third century to protect the city’s then-modest population. Today, the fortress boasts an abundance of attractions and activities, including lush pathways, museums, unbeatable sunset viewpoints, and playgrounds. Rife with open-air history, it is the singular best place to visit in Belgrade for travelers seeking an enriching but unhurried day.

Between the gunpowder warehouse, centuries-old ramparts, Belgrade Zoo, Pobednik (The Victor) Monument, and over a dozen other attractions, it’s easy to spend a day at Belgrade Fortress. Free entry to the grounds makes this attraction ideal for any travel budget. The fortress grounds are divided into four main sections: Donji Grad, Gornji Grad, Little Kalemegdan Park, and Large Kalemegdan Park. Visitors short on time may consider a tour that focuses on the fortress’ highlights.

  • Spanning 160 acres (66 hectares), the grounds of Belgrade Fortress are enormous, so wear comfortable walking shoes and carry an umbrella for unexpected showers.

  • Given the size of the grounds, travelers who are short on time would benefit from planning their visit in advance.

  • To enter and explore the fortress grounds is free. However, some activities may have a fee, including the military bunker, Roman well, and gunpowder warehouse.

Belgrade Fortress can easily be reached on foot from the city’s historic center. Visitors will find several entrances along Pariska, Pjarona de Mondezira, and Bulevar vojvode Bojovica streets. People arriving from further away can take tram lines 2 or 11 to Pariska or Kalemegdan stations or take tram lines 5, 10, or 11 to Tadeusa Koscuska station.

Belgrade Fortress is conveniently open year-round. Indeed, the most scenic time to visit is in spring and fall, when the foliage and landscaping are at their finest. As it’s the city’s most visited attraction, there is a constant stream of people enjoying the grounds from opening to close; visiting first thing in the morning may help to avoid some crowds. Check opening hours in advance, as they change with the seasons.

Belgrade Fortress hosts numerous events and activities throughout the year. From children’s plays to art exhibits, classical concerts, and a park-wide scavenger hunt, there’s something to entertain any traveler. Be sure to check before your departure for events and exhibitions happening during your visit, as some may require advanced purchases.
