Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture is at 125 Bull St., several blks. w. of the College of Charleston campus. Affiliated with the College of Charleston, the mission of the Avery Research is to collect, preserve, and promote the unique history and culture of the African Diaspora, with emphasis on Charleston and the South Carolina Lowcountry. Exhibits are comprised of art and artifacts from the institution's archives. Among the research collection are film, manuscripts, oral histories and rare books; the art collection includes sweetgrass basketry. Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
