Asen's Fortress (Asenova Krepost)

Asenovgrad, BGR

Nestled in Bulgaria’s Rhodope Mountains, Asen’s Fortress stands as a testament to the country’s rich history. Perched strategically on a hill, this medieval stronghold offers a vibrant journey into the past. With its panoramic views, 14th-century mural paintings, and neighboring attractions, Asen’s Fortress beckons both history lovers and curious travelers.

Upon arrival, explore the fortress’s well-preserved 13th-century Christian Orthodox church and its iconography. Soak in a 360-degree panorama at the summit showcasing the Rhodope Mountains, Asenovgrad town, the Thracian Valley, and the distant Balkan Range with its highest peak, Botev Peak.

Many travelers arrive on a day trip to Asen’s Fortress from Plovdiv or Sofia, either via car or, for a more comprehensive and stress-free experience, with an organized tour. These excursions often include visits to Bachkovo Monastery and the Wonderful Bridges. Adventure seekers can opt for a cycling tour from Plovdiv through the Rhodope Mountains.

  • The terrain may be uneven, so wear sturdy, comfortable shoes for ease of exploration.

  • Bring sunscreen and a hat, especially on sunny days, as shade surrounding the fortress is limited.

  • Tickets to Asen’s Fortress can be purchased only with cash, so be sure to have some Bulgarian lev on hand.

Asen’s Fortress is just 15 miles (23 kilometers) southeast of Plovdiv. It can be reached easily by taxi or private vehicle. Limited parking is available on-site. For a seamless journey, consider joining a guided tour with round-trip transportation. If using public transportation, take a bus from the Plovdiv South Bus Station or train from the Plovdiv Central Railway Station to Asenovgrad. From there, it’s a short taxi ride to the fortress.

Asen’s Fortress is open from morning to early evening, seven days a week. To fully appreciate the attraction, plan your visit during the temperate months of spring and fall. These seasons offer ideal weather for exploration, and allow you to avoid the extreme temperatures in summer and winter. Weekdays typically provide a quieter atmosphere and more contemplative experience.

While visiting Asen’s Fortress, don’t miss the chance to explore the Rhodope Mountains. Traverse scenic trails, discovering hidden gems like the Devil’s Throat Cave, while immersing yourself in the region’s rich folklore. From charming villages to the pristine wilderness, the Rhodopes offer an idyllic retreat for hiking, seeing wildlife, and further exploring Bulgaria’s culture. You can take a standard sightseeing tour, and also explore the region via horseback, zipline, snowmobile, and jeep excursions.
