Andén Cero
Plaza de Chamberí, Madrid, Spain, 28010
The Andén Cero is the ideal spot for fans of history and transport. Situated in the heart of Madrid, the Metro station preserved as a transport museum has been stuck in time since it closed in 1966. The original features remain in place, such as the ticket booth and advertisement posters, creating a window into the past.
The basics
The Andén Cero station closed in 1966 as it couldn't accommodate the growing number of Madrilleneans using the trains. Built in 1918, it was once part of Madrid’s underground rail network, one of Europe's first. The abandoned station evokes nostalgia, from its tiled walls to its varnished wooden benches and art nouveau signs. Tiled advertising billboards tell stories of life in the 1910s and 1920s. The museum is a wealth of information on Spain's public transportation.
Things to know before you go
The museum is in the Plaza de Chamberi.
There is no charge; however, there may be a queue to enter.
The Andén Cero has steps and may have uneven or slippery floors.
How to get there
The nearest functional Metro station to Andén Cero is either Iglesia or Bilbao. Buses stop directly outside the museum in the Plaza de Chamberi, and taxi cabs are easy to come by in the center of Madrid. If you walk from the city center, head towards Plaza de Olavide.
When to get there
The museum is only open over the weekends from mid-morning until early afternoon and on Fridays from late morning to early afternoon and again in the early evening. It’s advisable to give yourself plenty of time to get there since the opening times are short, and the museum is popular—especially in summer.
