Albrecht Dürer's House

Albrecht-Dürer-Straße 39, Nuremberg, DEU

One of Germany’s most famous Renaissance artists, Albrecht Dürer lived in Nuremberg from 1471 to 1528. He created paintings, prints, etchings, and woodcuts, and now his idyllic half-timbered home is a museum. During a visit, it’s possible to see reproductions of Dürer’s work, and a workshop that showcases historical printing techniques.

One of the historical highlights of Nuremberg’s Old Town, Albrecht Dürer’s House is also one of the only surviving 15th-century artist houses in Northern Europe. When visiting, you can enjoy a guided tour, with an actress playing Albrecht Dürer’s wife, Agnes.

If you’re not staying in Nuremberg, Munich is a common starting point for shared and private day trips to Nuremberg.

  • As Albrecht Dürer’s House is a preserved historic building, it’s not accessible for wheelchair-users or strollers.

  • It takes roughly 45 minutes to explore the museum independently, or 60–75 minutes if opting for a guided tour.

  • Independent visitors can use an audio guide to explore the museum. These are available in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, and Russian.

  • There are lockers available on-site, which require a €1 or €2 coin.

  • There’s no place to stop for food or drink in the museum, but there are plenty of cafés and restaurants nearby.

Set in the city’s historical center, the museum is easy to reach by public transportation. Take tram line #4 to Tiergärtnertor (a 2-minute walk away), or bus line #36 to Burgstrasse (a 5-minute walk away). There’s no on-site parking available, but it’s a 3-minute walk to Parking Garage Hauptmarkt, Augustinerstraße 4.

Albrecht Dürer’s House is open year-round, with the busiest months being July through September, and December. Outside of peak seasons, it’s sometimes closed on Mondays, so be sure to check opening times before visiting. To avoid the crowds, it’s best to arrive close to the museum opening time.

A talented multimedia artist, Albrecht Dürer has a diverse range of famous pieces. He is particularly well-known for his animal artwork, and specifically, an outstanding woodcut of a rhinoceros, which was created based on a written description that he received from Lisbon in 1515. His work was diverse, and he also created books on human anatomy, several self-portraits, and even altar pieces.
