Alberto J. Armando Stadium (La Bombonera Stadium)

Brandsen 805, La Boca, Buenos Aires, ARG

The beloved Boca Juniors soccer team plays its games at the Alberto J. Armando stadium, affectionately known as La Bombonera (Spanish for “the chocolate box”), which is also home to a museum and behind-the-scenes tour opportunities. With a capacity of 49,000, the stadium is known for vibrating when fans start jumping about—either out of excitement or frustration—as well as for its unusual shape.

Boca Juniors are one of the most beloved teams in Buenos Aires, and soccer fans shouldn’t miss the opportunity to visit this stadium. Behind-the-scenes tours offer a fascinating look at the sport that most Argentines live and die by, as well as the history of the Boca Juniors, founded in 1905 by five boys living in the neighborhood.

The on-site Museo de la Pasión Boquense displays a collection of sports memorabilia, including an entire section dedicated to the legendary player and coach Diego Maradona. An entrance ticket allows visitors to enter the museum, as well as the locker room and pitch.

  • La Bombonera Stadium is a must-visit for sports fans.

  • Don’t forget to bring your camera; the stadium tour features plenty of photo ops.

  • Tours of the stadium typically last about an hour.

  • The majority of La Bombonera Stadium is accessible for wheelchair users, but the steep stands are not.

La Bombonera is situated in La Boca neighborhood, just south of Microcentro and a short walk from the San Telmo neighborhood. Several public buses stop close to the stadium, but it’s also possible to get there by taxi.

Check the Boca Juniors schedule before your visit and book tickets in advance to watch a match. However, keep in mind that the museum and behind-the-scenes tours are typically unavailable on game days.

The rivalry between Boca Juniors and the cross-city team River Plate is one of the biggest in the soccer world. To get a better sense of the contentious history between these two teams, visit both La Bombonera and Estadio Monumental, the biggest stadium in Argentina and home of River Plate. This stadium also houses a sports museum, one of the largest in the world.
