Barrelling through the center of Buenos Aires, the grandiose Avenida 9 de Julio boasts some of the Argentinian capital’s most recognizable landmarks. The giant Obelisk reigns supreme over the thoroughfare, which is bordered by other big hitters such as Colon Theatre (Teatro Colón) and Avenida Corrientes, and was modeled on Paris’ grand Champs-Élysées.
You'll be hard-pressed to find a Buenos Aires sightseeing tour that doesn't pass through the city's main artery. Jump off when one of Avenida 9 de Julio’s many attractions captures your attention on a hop-on hop-off bus, or get your bearings on a full-day tour. These typically combine the boulevard with the colorful La Boca neighborhood, home of the Boca Juniors soccer team, and Plaza de Mayo with its pink Casa Rosada (Argentine president's official office).
The pavements on either side of the avenue are flat and paved, and therefore easy for strollers and wheelchairs to navigate.
There are pedestrian crossings evenly spaced throughout the thoroughfare, but you won't be able to cross the several lanes of traffic in one go—it is one of the world’s widest boulevards, after all.
Be mindful when checking your cell phone, as phone theft is common in Buenos Aires, even though the city is generally very safe.
You'll find Subte stations along the avenue, as Line C runs beneath it for a stretch, and lines A, B, D, and E intersect at the Obelisk. You'll need a Subte card, which you can buy from any kiosk with a Subte sign in the window. Buses take you to nearby neighborhoods such as Palermo (10A), Recoleta (59A, B), and La Boca (64A, B), and hop-on hop-off buses make plenty of stops along the avenue.
Regardless of what time of day or night you visit, Avenida 9 de Julio is bound to be bustling with people and traffic. You'll find plenty of 24-hour bars, restaurants, and stores along this stretch. The best time to visit Buenos Aires is in spring (October–December) when temperatures are ideal for exploring and you'll have the lowest chance of rain.
Teatro Colon ranks among Buenos Aires’ most famous landmarks—it delivers an inimitable mix of art deco and neoclassical architecture both inside and out. While guided tours are one way to learn about its history and focus on the finer details, the best way to experience the landmark is by attending a concert.
