American Revolution Museum at Yorktown
200 Water St., Yorktown, VA, 23690
American Revolution Museum at Yorktown is off I-64 exit 247 on SR 1020 at 200 Water St. The indoor and outdoor exhibits at this museum of the American Revolution, tell the story of the founding of the United States and the complexity of the country's Revolutionary heritage. Permanent exhibition galleries include period artifacts, immersive environments, dioramas, short films and an experiential theater with wind, smoke and cannon-fire special effects. Living-history takes place outdoors where visitors learn about daily life in a re-created Continental Army encampment. Soldiers at a 250-person amphitheater demonstrate how to fire a musket and recruit and train “volunteers” for positions on an artillery crew. Rows of tents include an adjutant’s office, captain’s quarters and an earthen kitchen. A different perspective can be seen at a recreation of a middle-class Revolution-era farm complete with a house, a tobacco barn, a kitchen, fields and a garden. Visitors can help the costumed interpreters tend crops and lend a hand with daily chores. Recently reconstructed slave quarters reflect the lives of enslaved African Americans during the Revolution. Time: Allow 2 hours minimum.
