Travel to Charlotte, N.C., for a taste of the Queen City’s culinary scene. Look for food places ranging from markets to high-end local restaurants.
The Market at 7th Street
224 E. 7th St.
Don’t fret if everyone wants to eat something different when you visit Charlotte; here’s where to go for variety and fast service. Carefully crafted pasta, dumplings and healthful smoothies are among the offerings in this food hall near Levine Museum of the New South, First Ward Park and ImaginOn. Grab a drink from one of the beverage purveyors, and then browse the goods at CLT Find, which supports local artisans.
Bad Daddy's Burger Bar
1626 East Blvd.
This restaurant in the neighborhood of Dilworth became so popular a chain was started that spans several states. Part of the charm is getting to choose a patty—black bean, beef, bison, even tuna—and then selecting from countless toppings and sides, including fries and homemade chips. You can build your own salad as well. For dessert, you can’t go wrong with either banana pudding or a milk shake.
Charlotte Regional Farmers Market
1804 Yorkmont Rd.
Come explore what is reputedly the area’s largest farmers market. You’ll be able to buy straight from the source (and maybe even chat with a farmer). Offerings include vegetables, fruits, meats, cheeses and other delectable goodies, such as jams and baked goods. If you’re searching for gifts, check out the handmade soaps and cut flowers available. You can browse Tuesday through Saturday, but note there are usually more things to see and buy on Saturday.
McNinch House Restaurant
511 N. Church St.
Praised by many local sources, this restaurant presents fine dining with superior service in a Queen Anne-style house in the Fourth Ward. The menu of the changes seasonally, with locally sourced ingredients. Diners can choose from multiple courses, a chef’s tasting menu and wine pairing options. Make reservations in advance at this longtime favorite, one of the best things for couples to do in Charlotte, and dress to impress.
Mert's Heart & Soul
214 N. College St.
Mert’s is not only a soul food restaurant in Charlotte but also a beloved institution that’s inspired by regional influences, such as Low Country and Gullah cuisine, and admired by celebrities and locals alike. Though the signature soul rolls—egg rolls filled with chicken, collard greens, black-eyed peas and seasoned rice—are maybe the most popular choice, order a sampler that incorporates all the favorites (soul roll, fried chicken wings, salmon cake and cornbread). Veggie plates also offer a way to try all the delicious sides; don’t miss the red beans or collard greens.Read More
