One of Uinta's highest points is 11,750-foot Mount Timpanogos; to the northwest is Timpanogos Cave National Monument. The forest offers scenic drives and has three wilderness areas: Lone Peak and Timpanogos on the north and Nebo on the south.
Mount Nebo Recreation Area is 10 miles from Nephi in the left fork of Salt Creek Canyon. The Nebo Scenic Byway, a 32-mile paved route through the mountains, passes overlooks with views of surrounding valleys. The loop begins at Payson and ends near Nephi. Mount Nebo, which can be seen from the highway, is the highest peak in the Wasatch mountain range. The fall foliage display is outstanding.
Twelve miles southeast of Payson on FR 15 are the Payson Lakes and Blackhawk recreation areas, where swimming and fishing are permitted. Payson Canyon Road is open when there is no snow accumulation. At the other end of the loop is Devil's Kitchen, which resembles Bryce Canyon but on a smaller scale.
Strawberry Reservoir Recreation Area, 23 miles south of Heber City, is popular for trout fishing and sailing and has boat ramps, a marina and camping facilities. Heber Mountain, 13 miles east of Heber City, offers many miles of groomed snowmobile trails. A visitor center has exhibits and trails with interpretive signage describing the natural resources of Strawberry Reservoir.
