The La Sal Division, in the spectacular natural bridge and red rock canyon country of southeastern Utah, is made up of two isolated mountain ranges, the La Sals, east of Moab, and the Blue Mountains, west of Monticello. Cross-country skiing and snowmobiling are popular in winter. The forest's La Sal and Abajo mountain ranges provide numerous opportunities for hiking and climbing. Trout fishing and hunting for grouse, waterfowl, turkeys, mule deer, elk, black bears and mountain lions are permitted. A variety of campsites are available.
There are spectacular views along the Skyline Drive Scenic Backway, an 87-mile-long scenic route through the high mountains along the crest of the Wasatch Plateau. Abundant wildlife includes elk, deer, bears and moose. A four-wheel-drive, high clearance vehicle is recommended to negotiate the narrow, rough, unpaved road, which is only open from mid-July through September. Contact one of the five ranger districts—Ferron, Price, Sanpete, Moab or Monticello—for an update on road conditions before attempting this drive.
