Sparta

The Deke Slayton Memorial Space & Bicycle Museum displays artifacts, documents and photographs related to the Sparta native's career as an aviator and astronaut, as well as exhibits related to the history of the bicycle. The exhibits are on the second floor of the Monroe County Museum at 200 W. Main St.; phone (608) 269-0033.

Six miles east of Sparta is Fort McCoy, the state's only U.S. Army installation. Two recreation areas on the base are open to the public: Pine View, (608) 388-3517, offers camping, hiking, boating, swimming, fishing and hunting; Whitetail Ridge, (608) 388-4498, is a winter facility for downhill and cross-country skiing, snow-tubing and snowmobiling.
