On the courthouse green is a marker commemorating the Edenton Tea Party, thought to be the first purely political action by women in the American Colonies—on Oct. 25, 1774, a group of 51 signed a resolution supporting the action of the North Carolina Provincial Assembly to boycott highly taxed British goods.

Self-guiding Tours

The visitor center provides a map ($1) outlining several self-guiding walking tours focusing on the area's African American history and architectural legacy. Guided walking and trolley tours are offered for a fee. Free maps and brochures promoting historic sites and attractions in northeastern North Carolina also are available.

The park is in the northern part of Cape Breton Island. Bounded on the west by the Gulf of St. Lawrence and on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, the park protects 950 square kilometres (366 sq. mi.) of highlands and coastal wilderness. The first national park in the Atlantic provinces, it bears a striking resemblance to coastal regions of Scotland.
