DESTINATION

Cooperstown

Another renowned Cooperstown resident was Gen. Abner Doubleday, who, by official decree of the National Baseball Commission in 1908, was credited with founding the game of baseball in 1839 while a student at a military academy. However, more recent research indicates that credit also is due to the man who devised the playing field and many of the rules, New York City resident Alexander Joy Cartwright.

About 3 miles west of Cooperstown via SR 28 to CR 26 is the Fly Creek Cider Mill & Orchard at 288 Goose St. The water-powered mill has been in operation since 1856. Visitors can observe the apple cider-making process during harvest season and feed ducks at the mill pond. Picnicking is permitted. Phone (607) 547-9692 or (800) 505-6455.
