DESTINATION

Vincennes

During the American Revolution 25-year-old George Rogers Clark attempted to seize all the land northwest of the Ohio River for Virginia; he defeated the British garrison in 1779. Virginia, however, failed to prevent the lawlessness and violence that beset the territory and ceded the land to the United States as a public domain five years later.
