Richmond

In Glen Miller Park, the E.G. Hill Memorial Rose Garden cultivates more than 73 varieties of roses, and the All-American Rose Garden displays 2,000 rose bushes, annuals and perennials. At the park entrance is the Madonna of the Trail, a monument to pioneer women. It is one of the many historic structures along the Old National Road (US 40), the 1800s avenue of trade, culture and migration that extended westward from Cumberland, Md., to St. Louis.

Whitewater River Gorge, a deep channel formed by retreating Wisconsin glaciers during the most recent ice age, is bordered by a 3.5-mile trail that passes several natural and historical attractions. The trail extends from Test Road to Thistlethwaite Falls.

The Hayes Arboretum, 2 mi. w. on US 40 from I-70 exit 156, then .5 mi. n. on Elks Rd., offers a glimpse of the Whitewater Valley's native flora and fauna. The 466-acre woodland area, open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from March through October, offers hiking trails and a 3.5-mile driving tour; phone (765) 962-3745.

The Richmond Civic Theatre and the Richmond Symphony Orchestra offer productions throughout the year.

The Old Richmond Historic District, covering some 250 acres and encompassing more than 213 historical structures, is in an area bounded by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad and South A, South 10th and South E streets. The district contains Federal, Greek Revival, Victorian and early 20th-century houses and churches. The Starr Historic District has many structures dating to the early 1800s, while the Historic Depot District is home to chic boutiques, restaurants and entertainment venues. The Gennett Walk of Fame commemorates artists who recorded at Gennett Records in the 1920s, including Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Hoagy Carmichael.
