What to Do in Jefferson City

The first building denoting Missouri's capital city, completed in 1826, was destroyed by fire in 1837; a new one begun the same year burned after it was struck by lightning in 1911. The present structure was built in 1918. The Governor's Mansion was built in 1871 on the site of the original Capitol. Guided tours of the residence are given Tues.-Thurs. 9-11:30, May-July and Sept.-Nov. To arrange a tour contact the governor's office; phone (573) 751-7929.
