Washakie Museum & Cultural Center is at 2200 Big Horn Ave.; a 25-foot-tall bronze mammoth greets visitors at the entrance. Fossils, mammoth bones and rock art are on display in The Ancient Basin, an exhibit that explores the archeology, geology and paleontology of the Big Horn Basin. The Last West exhibit chronicles area history, highlighting events like the Johnson County War, the Spring Creek Raid and the harsh winter of 1886-87.
Visitors can watch movies about cattle barons and global climate change, hear stories about the Old West and the railroad era, and use a touch screen to design their own cattle brand. Changing exhibits, special events and educational programs are offered throughout the year.
