Fort Crawford Museum is at 717 S. Beaumont Rd. Located in the hospital of the second Fort Crawford built 1829-33, the museum chronicles area history, including Native American treaties, the first and second Fort Crawford, the Blackhawk War and the Civil War.
Highlights include a reconstructed pharmacy of the 1890s, dioramas illustrating the progress of surgery, and models of the human body depicting functions of the various systems and organs. An exhibit describes Dr. William Beaumont's research on the digestive system while at Fort Crawford in the 1830s. Photo documentation and artifacts uncovered during a 1999 archeological dig on the fort grounds are on display.
Also on the grounds is the Museum of Prairie du Chien, where exhibits focus on the War of 1812, prehistoric fossils, Native American artifacts, the flood of 1965 and the area's railroad industry.
Picnic tables are available.
Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
