Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory—“The Domes” is off I-94 exit 309B, just w. on St. Paul Ave., then .7 mi. s. on 27th St. to 524 S. Layton Blvd. Three glass domes, each seven stories high and 140 feet in diameter, house a variety of exotic gardens; the tops of the domes are highlighted by halo lights.
The Desert Dome features plants from the world's deserts, such as cactuses, succulents, palms and grasses. More than 750 species of plants, including orchids, thrive in the Tropical Dome; birds, lizards and frogs also inhabit this rain forest-like environment. Five themed floral displays each year are presented in the Show Dome; the displays of lilies and poinsettias are spectacular at Easter and Christmas.
Time: Allow 1 hour, 30 minutes minimum.
