Monroe County Historical Society Museum Complex, at US 219/Main and Fairview sts., features historical buildings, Civil War-era exhibits and carriages in the National Historic District of Union. The 1810 Clark-Wiseman and Owen Neel II log cabins reveal pioneer life complete with period furnishings. Interior exhibits of the 1820 Hugh Caperton law office include Native American artifacts, historic tools and a uniform of J.W.M. Appleton, a recruiter for the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, the African American troop portrayed in the 1989 Civil War film "Glory."
The Carriage House Museum showcases a John Stephenson Company omnibus, a sleigh and other 19th century horse-drawn vehicles.
