AAA Editor Notes
West Virginia State Capitol is on Kanawha Blvd. E., facing the Kanawha River. This masterpiece of architect Cass Gilbert was completed in 1932. The outstanding feature is the rotunda's dome, 180 feet above the main floor. From its center hangs a 2-ton rock crystal chandelier, 8 feet in diameter. The second-floor ceiling is decorated with a panel design showing leaves of West Virginia's native trees.
The building's office wings house the state administrative departments, including the Supreme Court and Law Library. The governor's mansion is next door.
Guided tours are available. Food is available.
